Blikkets Corsage & Hun trak kortet Coventina
The two sculptures Blikkets Corsage (Corset of the Gaze) and Hun trak kortet Coventina (She pulled the card Coventina) were developed for the pop-up show Temporary Truth at Thorvaldsen Museum curated by pro.temp.
Hun trak kortet Coventina is a sculpture of a heart mounted on a stone, made from upcycled plant dyed textiles. In the middle of the heart is a fake pearl. The title of the work refers to oracle cards that, similar to tarot cards, can offer answers to the users’ situations. The oracle card, Goddess Coventina, shows itself if the user hasn’t been taking care of themselves - and it is a sign to start doing it. Coventina is the goddess for oceans, lakes, streams, ponds and rivers.
Blikkets Corsage is a giant bodily handbag. The bag points to the metaphorical luggage we carry around with us and the history of the handbag in the liberation of women - since it allowed women to travel without being escorted by men. Blikkets Corsage explores bodies that divert from conventional beauty and how the (male) gaze limits and maintains the body in certain shapes. Through the sculpture, the metaphorical gaze materializes and acts as a corset - it encloses and deforms the body. On the surface the sculpture is covered with sustainable clay, a product which in contrast to paint, lets the covered up surface breathe. In that way a possibility of change and agency is introduced in the body that is the sculpture: it may be slowly suffocating from the gaze, but it can still breathe, talk, take up space.
